Are you currently dealing with excessive fatigue, lingering headaches, and decreased memory? If you notice any of these symptoms on a regular basis, you may have sleep apnea. Undiagnosed and untreated, sleep apnea can seriously impact your health in many ways. But before you can do anything about your sleep apnea, you must receive the proper diagnosis. If you have ever wondered about sleep apnea testing, the answer might be simpler than you think.

There are two main forms of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea testing is vital for correctly diagnosing the type you have. Central sleep apnea is a neurological issue requiring care from specialists and neurologists. Obstructive sleep apnea is more common. It occurs when the in your throat, tongue, or other soft tissues relax and obstruct your airway as you sleep. Since you’re not getting enough air, your brain senses an inability to breath and briefly wakes you so you can open your airway. The awakening is so short you usually don’t remember it.

What is Sleep Apnea Testing?

No matter what type of sleep apnea you have, you shouldn’t hesitate to get tested by the team of certified professionals at Hudson Valley Sleep Solutions.

The testing process is simple and can be completed in a matter of days. You’ll begin by filling out a questionnaire that will help us begin to diagnose your condition. Based on the answers you provide, we can identify certain risk factors you may be facing and possible complications you may encounter during treatment.

Your sleep breathing patterns may be measured using advanced acoustic reflection technology known as pharyngometry, which determines the air volume of your airways.

You may then be asked to complete a sleep study with the take-home Apnea Risk Evaluation System or ARES™. This system is specially designed for comfort and the ability to be worn in all sleep positions. The device can store three nights of data that measure your blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, airflow, snoring levels, and head position and movement. A certified physician will examine these readings to properly diagnose your sleep condition.

After the Test?

Based on the results of your tests, the team at Hudson Valley Sleep Solutions can then develop a specialized treatment plan for your sleep apnea. This plan doesn’t involve you getting into a CPAP machine. We’re proud to offer an array of different treatments to you can effectively manage your sleep apnea.  Once we determine the cause of your sleep apnea, we will design an oral device that fits over your teeth to open your airway while you sleep.
