The Tischler Dental Team at the 2010 Give Kids a Smile Day

Children have unique dental concerns. Tischler Dental offers many treatments to address these concerns. Among them are sealants and orthodontic braces. A vital part of a comprehensive preventive plan, sealants protect the teeth from the bacteria that cause decay and help to prevent the need for expensive future treatments such as fillings and crowns. Orthodontic braces are another important dental treatment for many children, helping to realign the teeth and the jaw. By aligning the teeth and jaw, speech and function problems are averted and oral hygiene is improved. Tischler Dental offers sealants and orthodontic braces to patients from the greater Hudson Valley area, including Ulster County and Dutchess County. Contact us to learn more about the unique dental concerns of children and how our practice can address them. We are a family practice and love treating kids. We also at times work with Pediatric Dental Specialists as a referral.

Sealants

Sealants consist of a plastic coating that is painted on the uneven chewing surface of the tooth to keep germs and other particles from causing tooth decay. Commonly applied to the permanent molars soon after they have emerged from the gums, sealants are a preventive measure that help to protect the teeth from damage. Though sealants are not permanent, they can last anywhere from five to ten years. To learn more about sealants, contact Tischler Dental today.

The Sealant Procedure

The sealant procedure is quick and can be performed during a regular cleaning appointment. Once the teeth that will receive the sealants have been thoroughly cleaned, we put a gel on the chewing surface of the tooth. After a short period of time, this gel is rinsed off. We then paint the plastic sealant material on the tooth. When the sealant dries-usually in a minute or two-it forms a protective barrier against the bacteria that cause decay.

Orthodontics and Braces

For some, orthodontic braces are a normal part of childhood. Intended to correct the alignment of the teeth or jaw, braces are commonly made of a combination of metal, plastic, or ceramic. While metal orthodontic braces are the norm, clear plastic options such as Invisalign® invisible braces are available to teenagers. Orthodontic braces are comprised of a metal bracket affixed to each tooth. Wire is connected to each bracket and helps move the teeth into their desired position.

Orthodontic Braces Procedure

The procedure for orthodontic braces takes place over several sessions. Your initial visits will consist of a thorough bite evaluation and the development of a treatment plan. Through x-rays, photographs, and impressions, we will achieve a comprehensive understanding of your current bite, what it will look like once treatment is complete, and how long it will take to complete treatment. The typical treatment time for braces is between eighteen months and two years. Once your treatment plan has been decided upon, we will place the braces on your teeth. Periodic visits to check on the progress and tighten the brackets occur several times a year.
