Holistic Dentistry
At Tischler Dental, we believe that treating the "whole person" – that is, seeing your dental well being in the context of your overall health – is the wisest and best way to approach any dental treatment situation. This is part of our practice philosophy. Accordingly, we employ homeopathic remedies for pre- and post-dental treatment care, use only bio-compatible dental materials for restorative work, and offer acupuncture for the relief of stress and pain and to promote healing. What follows is a brief description of each of these areas.

Treating the Teeth as Part of the Whole
Whole Living Guide by Dylana Accolla
Published: in CHRONOGRAM MAGAZINE
Summary: When Chronogram Magazine was looking to do a piece on holistic dentistry and “alternative” dentists, they looked no further than Woodstock. The article examines holistic dentistry with our dentists Maurice Tischler DDS and Fred Milton DDS. Our dentists at Tischler Dental treat chronic body pain though the teeth.
Excerpts: “I was looking for dentists who don’t just treat the teeth, but who connect the teeth to the whole body. The first place I was sent was to the ‘guru of alternative dentistry,’ Maurice ‘Buzzy’ Tischler, DDS, in Woodstock … Tischler is an impressive juxtaposition of the right credentials from both the establishment and from outside the box.”

“’Every time you swallow, your teeth touch and your body gets a neuro-muscular reading off your teeth,’ Milton explained. If your teeth aren’t in balance, your body readjusts. In fact, your body enters a state of constant readjustment. After a while, you become a chronic pain patient.”

When Body Pain Won't Go Away, Consider Your Teeth
By W. Fred Milton, DMD – Tischler Dental Associate
Published: in ABOUT TOWN MAGAZINE
Summary: This article, written by our very own Fred Milton DMD, discusses how he entered the field of holistic dentistry and how subtle, non-invasive adjustments to a patient’s teeth can alleviate chronic body pain. Dr. Milton utilizes resultant force vectors (RFV) and contact reflex analysis (CRA) to eliminate pain, enabling the body to heal itself.
Excerpts: “I saw a patient who had constantly complained of painfully sensitive teeth, though I could find no detectable sign of decay. Hers was an extreme case. In spite of my desire to do otherwise I had repeatedly felt forced to send her to a root canal specialist. By the time I saw her, the woman had had over twenty-two root canals! This time, seeing her with yet another emergency, she showed me exactly which tooth was hurting and asked me to adjust it. I told her I’d just gone to a seminar and asked her to bear with me as I tried a new method to find the source of her pain.
“Using RFV, I found that the tooth that was actually out of alignment was on the opposite side of the tooth she was indicating. Adjustments to the misaligned tooth restored the balance of her bite, and thus her body, and her pain went away. I have continued to use RFV in treating her. She has since been pain-free and has never had another root canal.”

“When the body is returned to balance through methods such as RFV, it kicks in to heal itself. The results are undeniable.
“When other treatments have not been successful in relieving pain or other ailments, injuries or syndromes, perhaps healing can be found through the kind of treatment I've described. When considering your health, don't forget your teeth. They most certainly do more than chew food.”

Dental Materials
The materials used in our office are carefully researched for their biocompatibility. Mercury restorations are not offered. Nickel is not available in any restoration. Biocompatible gold and porcelain is used where structurally possible. Metal free alternatives are used when there are electrochemical concerns. Non Eugenol cements are offered to allergic patients. Lab processed hybrid inlays are used often, reducing any unpolymerized resin. Titanium is used instead of stainless steel for posts. We work with a board certified allergist that tests for biocompatibility and allergic reactions. Non epinepherine local anesthetics with non sulfide preservatives are used when indicated.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine is a framework of our dental pre-treatment and post- treatment care. The ancient art of Homeopathy has been used for centuries to heal. In our practice the remedies Arnica, Hypericum, and Ruta are often used. In addition to homeopathy, we use flower remedies such as the Bach Rescue Remedy with our patients. Tincture of Myrrh and Benzoin are extensively used for gum irritations.
Homeopathy is an alternative system of medicine that was founded in the early 19th century by a German physician, Dr. Hahnemann. It had its greatest popularity in the late 19th century here in the United States, when 15% of the doctors in this country were homeopaths. However, with the advent of modern medicine, homeopathy began to look old and stodgy and its popularity took a nosedive. However, since 1980 homeopathy has seen a resurgence of interest in the United States and the U.K.; homeopathic books can be found in many bookstores and homeopathic physicians in most towns and cities.
Classical homeopathy rests on three principles: the law of similars, the single medicine, and the minimum dose. The law of similars states that a disease is cured by a medicine which creates symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing in a healthy person. Hence an important part of the prescription of a homeopathic medicine is a lengthy interview to determine all the symptoms the patient is experiencing. The homeopathic physician then determines which medicine best matches the symptoms that the patient is experiencing and prescribes it.
The principle of the single remedy states that a single medicine should cover all the symptoms the patient is experiencing: mental, emotional, and physical. A classical homeopath would not prescribe one medicine for a headache and another for an upset stomach, he or she would find a single medicine that covered both symptoms. The principle of the minimum dose has two parts. First the homeopathic physician only prescribes a small number of doses of the homeopathic medicine and waits to see what effect the medicine has. Second, the medicine is given in an infinitesimal dose. Homeopaths have discovered that the effect of homeopathic medicines is strengthed upon successive dilutions as long as the medicine is violently shaken between each dilution. Medicines are typically used in very high dilutions such as 30C (1 part in 10^-60) or 200C (1 part in 10^-400).
It is the use of infinitesimal doses that is the most controversial aspect of homeopathy and the reason why most conventional doctors claim it functions only as a placebo. However, a number of controlled studies have been performed which show the effectiveness of homeopathic medicine in treating a number of diseases. The best summary of this research is a study published in the British Medical Journal. The authors of this study are not homeopaths but medical school professors asked by the Dutch government to review the existing research.

Acupuncture
A certified acupuncturist, Dr. Maurice Tischler has utilized acupuncture with dentistry for many years. Treatment from acupuncture can help relax a patient, treat dental pain, help TMJ problems, and help the healing process. In addition to traditional acupuncture, Dr. Tischler is trained in electroacupunture, laser acupuncture and auricular acupuncture. Magnet therapy is also used in the practice for stimulation of acupuncture points.
Here is a synopsis of acupuncture basics from the American Association of Oriental Medicine:
Acupuncture is a complete medical system that is used to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve well-being. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional problems. Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,500 years ago and, due to its proven effectiveness has been embraced throughout the world.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS
Recently science has determined that human beings are complex bioelectric systems. This understanding has been the foundation of acupuncture practice for several thousand years. Energy circulates throughout the body along well-defined pathways. Points on the skin along these pathways are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures, and systems. If this energy circulation is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this results in pain or illness. Acupuncture points are stimulated to balance the circulation of energy, which influence the health of the entire being.
TYPES OF TREATMENT
Treatment with acupuncture needles is the most commonly used technique. However, an acupuncturist or Dr. of Oriental Medicine may utilize other forms of treatment such as herbal prescriptions, dietary modifications, moxibustion (a form of heat therapy), a variety of massage, movement techniques and specific therapeutic exercises.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE FEELS
Prior to their first treatment, many people do not believe that acupuncture can be painless. Different sensations such as warmth or pressure may be felt, but the energetic sensation differs from pain. People often comment that the feeling is unfamiliar but pleasant and relaxing. Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the size of a thick hair. They are solid and nothing is injected through them. Over the centuries, refined needle insertion techniques have been developed which enable the skilled acupuncturist to place a needle with little or no sensation.
SAFETY
State and federal agencies have established strict procedures for needle sterilization. Knowledge and proper utilization of these procedures are part of licensing examinations. In order to assure your complete confidence, many practitioners use pre-sterilized, disposable needles. Ask your acupuncturist or Dr. of Oriental Medicine about their use.
BENEFITS
Since acupuncture promotes the body's natural healing ability, most conditions can be corrected or improved. Oriental Medicine is a comprehensive system of preventive health care and health maintenance. The effectiveness of acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is well documented and extends far beyond the conception that it is only useful for chronic pain management or as an analgesic.
