Homeopathic remedies used at Tischler Dental

At Tischler Dental, we believe that treating the "whole person" – that is, seeing your dental well-being in the context of your overall health – is the wisest and best way to approach any dental treatment situation. This is part of our practice philosophy. Accordingly, we employ homeopathic remedies for pre- and post-dental treatment care, use only bio-compatible dental materials for restorative work, and offer acupuncture for the relief of stress and pain and to promote healing. If you are interested in learning more about our commitment to the principles of holistic dentistry, contact our practice serving Hudson Valley, Ulster County, and Dutchess County, as well as patients from around the world, today.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry is an approach to dental treatment that primarily includes caring for a patient's health and safety from both a conventional as well as an "alternative healthcare" point of view. In holistic dentistry there is an effort to find biocompatible materials to reduce toxicity. Holistic dentistry treats the “whole person” by improving your dental health. At Tischler Dental, we see your dental well-being in the context of your overall health and holistic dentistry is an integral component of our practice philosophy. If you would like to know more about holistic dentistry or would like to arrange a consultation, contact our Woodstock office today.

Dental Materials

The materials used in our office are carefully researched for their biocompatibility. Mercury restorations are not offered. Nickel is not available in any restoration. Biocompatible gold and porcelain is used where structurally possible. Metal free alternatives are used when there are electrochemical concerns. Non-eugenol cements are offered to allergic patients. Lab processed hybrid inlays are used often, reducing any unpolymerized resin. Titanium is used instead of stainless steel for posts. We work with a board certified allergist who tests for biocompatibility and allergic reactions. Non-epinepherine local anesthetics with non-sulfide preservatives are used when indicated.

More on Zirconia Implants

Not so long ago, dental implants were a highly acclaimed new technique, and now they are more and more commonly used. Now, a new material will once again revolutionize dental implantology - that material is zirconium. Metal-free implants (also known as Zirconium implants or all-ceramic implants) are made of zirconium, a naturally occurring, extremely hard metal-free substance. Zirconium is resistant against acids and corrosion, and is biocompatible, which means no allergic reactions should be expected. Some patients experience allergic reactions to metallic implants, and will not experience allergies with zirconium-based implants. Until recently, all dental implants were made of titanium, but recent state-of-the-art dental care also includes a metal-free option in zirconium. Zirconium implants have been only available in Europe until recently, but now they are available in the United States, and we are happy to be able to offer our patients an absolute metal-free option to restore their smiles. HISTORY OF ZIRCONIUM IMPLANTS Zirconium is very resistant to corrosion and is lighter than steel. It was first discovered in the late 1700s in Germany, and then about 30 years later was first isolated as a metal. In the late 1960s, it was studied as a potential biomaterial called TZP, and it was found that its properties were ideal for the construction of hip prostheses. In 1975, a British physicist Ron Garvie found that the tetragonal structure of zirconium dioxide could be stabilized by adding about 5.5% yttrium oxide material, resulting in an extremely hard ceramic material. This improved its already exceptional mechanical properties and increased its high biological stability. Zirconium's sheer strength prompted its nickname, 'ceramic steel', and over the past two decades it has debuted in the field of dentistry - first for the fabrication of strong crowns, and then more recently as a strong, tooth-colored and metal-free dental implant material. Zirconium is one of the best ceramics used today for dental reconstructions. Since it entered the field in the 1990s, it has been used increasingly, and today it is estimated that up to 20,000 zirconia structures are made across the world each day. Decades of testing have shown that a zirconia bridge can retain its strength even after 50 years. What's better, studies have also shown that zirconium is extremely biocompatible, and does not cause allergies in humans. Instead, it is readily accepted by the body. Zirconium metal-free dental implants have been used in Europe for years now, and are now available in the U.S. We are happy to offer our patients in New York City and Northern and Central New Jersey completely metal-free options to restore their smiles. ADVANTAGES OF METAL-FREE IMPLANTS The biggest advantages of Zirconium metal-free implants are that they are: • Natural - Zirconium Implants make it unnecessary to implant titanium or any other metal into the jaw bone in order to create fixed teeth replacements. Zirconia implants are a holistic, natural choice of dental implant. • Hygienic - Zirconium dental implants are shown to retain less plaque than their titanium counterparts, which will promote healthier gums around the implant. • Cosmetically Aesthetic - Zirconium has the advantage of its bright white tooth-like colour which, as a base for a tooth replacement, appears even more natural than crowns with metal implants underneath. Its translucence makes excellent cosmetic results possible. The white color of zirconium implants also eliminates the possibility of a darkened gumline that sometimes occurs with metal implants. From our standpoint as dental implant specialists, zirconium also has other advantages that are less cosmetically related, but are extremely important to the success and longevity of the implant. Zirconium is also: • Strong - Zirconium is the second strongest material found in nature (next to the diamond), and the strength of zirconium implants is equal to that of titanium implants. • Biocompatible - Zirconium is absolutely inert and therefore does not cause any allergic reactions. It is readily accepted and integrated by the body, and has been used for artificial hip and knee joints for over 20 years. • Osseointegrative: Zirconia dental implants have a high rate of osseointegration, confirmed by numerous studies in both Germany and the United States. Why is zirconium's color so important? Up until recently, most dental implants have been made of titanium. When restorations are built on a dark metal alloy base (like titanium), they tend to look opaque and monochromatic, and sometimes show a darker grayness at the gum line. Since zirconium is a bright white tooth-color - and is even translucent like natural teeth, the ceramic dental restorations are built on top of an already-matching tooth-colored base which leads to an even more natural looking appearance and mimicks the translucency of natural teeth. What does "Biocompatible" mean? A substance is biocompatible if it does not produce a toxic, allergic or immunological response in living tissue. Zirconium is readily accepted by the body and integrated into the body's natural bone, is not toxic to the body, and does not cause allergic reactions.

Treating the Teeth as Part of the Whole

Whole Living Guide by Dylana Accolla
Published: in CHRONOGRAM MAGAZINE

Summary: When Chronogram Magazine was looking to do a piece on holistic dentistry and “alternative” dentists, they looked no further than Woodstock. The article examines holistic dentistry with our dentists Maurice Tischler, DDS and Fred Milton, DMD. Our dentists at Tischler Dental treat chronic body pain though the teeth.

Excerpts: “I was looking for dentists who don’t just treat the teeth, but who connect the teeth to the whole body. The first place I was sent was to the ‘guru of alternative dentistry,’ Maurice ‘Buzzy’ Tischler, DDS, in Woodstock … Tischler is an impressive juxtaposition of the right credentials from both the establishment and from outside the box.”

“’Every time you swallow, your teeth touch and your body gets a neuro-muscular reading off your teeth,’ Milton explained. If your teeth aren’t in balance, your body readjusts. In fact, your body enters a state of constant readjustment. After a while, you become a chronic pain patient.”

When Body Pain Won't Go Away, Consider Your Teeth

By W. Fred Milton, DMD – Tischler Dental Associate
Published: in ABOUT TOWN MAGAZINE

Summary: This article, written by our very own Fred Milton, DMD, discusses how he entered the field of holistic dentistry and how subtle, non-invasive adjustments to a patient’s teeth can alleviate chronic body pain. Dr. Milton utilizes resultant force vectors (RFV) and contact reflex analysis (CRA) to eliminate pain, enabling the body to heal itself.

Excerpts: “I saw a patient who had constantly complained of painfully sensitive teeth, though I could find no detectable sign of decay. Hers was an extreme case. In spite of my desire to do otherwise I had repeatedly felt forced to send her to a root canal specialist. By the time I saw her, the woman had had over twenty-two root canals! This time, seeing her with yet another emergency, she showed me exactly which tooth was hurting and asked me to adjust it. I told her I’d just gone to a seminar and asked her to bear with me as I tried a new method to find the source of her pain.

“Using RFV, I found that the tooth that was actually out of alignment was on the opposite side of the tooth she was indicating. Adjustments to the misaligned tooth restored the balance of her bite, and thus her body, and her pain went away. I have continued to use RFV in treating her. She has since been pain-free and has never had another root canal.”

***

“When the body is returned to balance through methods such as RFV, it kicks in to heal itself. The results are undeniable."

“When other treatments have not been successful in relieving pain or other ailments, injuries or syndromes, perhaps healing can be found through the kind of treatment I've described. When considering your health, don't forget your teeth. They most certainly do more than chew food.”

Acupuncture

A certified acupuncturist and our resident holistic dentistry expert, Dr. Maurice Tischler has utilized acupuncture with dentistry for many years. Treatment from acupuncture can help relax a patient, treat dental pain, help TMJ problems, and help the healing process. In addition to traditional acupuncture, Dr. Tischler is trained in electroacupunture, laser acupuncture, and auricular acupuncture. Magnet therapy is also used in the practice for stimulation of acupuncture points.

Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,500 years ago. Used to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease, and improve overall well-being, acupuncture is a complete medical system that addresses physical, physiological, and emotional problems. Due to its proven effectiveness, acupuncture has stood the test of time and been embraced throughout the world.

How Acupuncture Works

Although science has only recently determined that our bodies are complex bioelectric systems, this understanding has been the foundation of acupuncture practice for several thousand years. Energy circulates throughout the body along well-defined pathways. Points on the skin along these pathways are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures, and systems. If this energy circulation is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this results in pain or illness. Acupuncture points are stimulated to balance the circulation of energy, which influence the health of the entire being.

Types of Treatment

Treatment with acupuncture needles is the most commonly used technique. However, an acupuncturist or Doctor of Oriental Medicine may utilize other forms of treatment such as herbal prescriptions, dietary modifications, moxibustion (a form of heat therapy), a variety of massage, movement techniques, and specific therapeutic exercises.

How Acupuncture Feels

Although many patients who have not undergone acupuncture are skeptical, the treatment is completely painless. Patients may feel sensations such as warmth or pressure but the energetic sensation differs from pain and is often described as pleasant or relaxing. The needles, which are very fine and approximately the size of a thick hair, are solid and are not used to inject anything.

Safety

State and federal agencies have established strict procedures for needle sterilization. Knowledge and proper utilization of these procedures are part of licensing examinations. To ensure your complete confidence, Tischler Dental’s holistic dentistry specialist utilizes pre-sterilized, disposable needles. Contact our office serving Ulster County, Dutchess County, and the Hudson Valley to arrange a consultation with Dr. Maurice Tischler to learn more about acupuncture techniques.

Benefits

Most conditions can be corrected or improved using acupuncture. Acupuncture promotes the body’s natural healing ability. The effectiveness of this ancient technique is well documented and the potential uses are innumerable.
